HDMI - PS3 - BOSE Lifestyle 18 - DirectTV HD & My TV?

I recently bought the Bose Lifestyle 18 surround system and the Sony KDS-R50XBR1 50" Grand Wega SXRD, and will be getting the PS3 when it comes out. Looking at the Bose reciever, it doesn't have an HDMI connection, and I know the PS3 will - along with the Blue-Ray DVD.

Pardon my ignorance here, I'm new to the home theater and HD scene - But will I be able to use the PS3 with the surround sound? If so, how? Would it have to route through the DirecTV reciever (has an HDMI outlet) and since the Bose reciever is connected to it, work that way?

Any other tips for optimal setup would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks

You will be connecting the HDMI output on your PS3 to the TV for video and 2 channel audio. Your PS3 will also come with an optical output for digital audio; this will connect to your Bose system. When hooking up any audio/video device, it is important to make sure all necessary settings are changed for optimal performance. On your Bose unit, you'll have to access the system menu to tell it what input is using the optical input (IE: AUX). You'll also want to make sure that you use the AdaptIQ DVD that came with your system to make sure your getting the best sound. On your PS3, you'll need to access its settings to let it know what type of TV you have and that your using Dolby Digital. Also, your Bose system comes with 2 component video adapters. You'll want to use this for your new TV. If you get a weird picture, you need to access the systems menu again to let it know that your using component video.

I hope this helps.

You can either route it through your DirecTV box, or purchase a scaler to convert it from HDMI to DVI or whatever connection your TV has, the PS3 may also be available with adapters to other connectors than the HDMI. Good luck but this is your most likely possibilities.

Good Luck

Clinton had been in office 38 days when terrorists bombed the WTC ,his res ponce, he warned Americans against "overreacting" and in an MTV interview he described the bombing as the work of someone who "did something really stupid". The last act of terrorism came on 10-12-2000. USS Cole,17 American sailors were killed 39 others were wounded, Clinton's mouth came out strong "We will find out who was responsible and hold them accountable" although he most likely would have had solid public support for strong military action,HE DID NOTHING! Defend that libs, defend a direct attack against our navy and the killing of US sailors and Clinton did NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!! He tried, he tried, HE LIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
how can a BJ from an ugly ho be more important than clinton pleasing himself while people were murdered. The new motto for clinton he got head while others were left for dead
I've always wondered where the ACLU was when the Waco thing happened.

You're working way too hard for this forum, but I like your work.
what is Bush doing? going into Iraq?

I guess your too stupid to know that IRAQ DIDN'T DO ANY OF THAT!...

but hey... you keep thinking you're making a difference... see all the attacks you listed since 9-11? he's obviously doing such a great job!

I'll sit down and watch a fool think he's doing some good... and watch fools support him that don't know any better...

call me when you care about Osama again...
Doesn't sound like a peaceful religion, and the people who support it should change things a bit.
"slick Willie" Clinton did not do a MF thing about any of these terrorist attacks. Sunday, this SOB look like he was going to have a bloomin' stroke during that interview on FOX. Chris Wallace had that idiot going, but I wasn't able to watch all of it, but what I did see made my day.

Broadway...?

I have always dreamed about being on broadway. When I go to see shows in NYC, I get chills that cover my body %26amp; I watch in awe of the hardwork, talent and energy that the stage evokes and portrays for the audience. I not only enjoy watching broadway shows, but also I like to perform in local shows. I am a grand fan of show tunes, and hopefully one day, I will be able to sing some of these songs with the most talented people in NYC (broadway performers). But as much as I love theater, the stage, productions, performing.. I do not want fame %26amp; strongly dislike competition. So, I would not want to go and audition in the city for commercials and such.My questions are: how can I make it to broadway without fame? If anyone out there has ever performed on broadway, what advice and experience can you share with me? How can I achieve my dream and still remain a normal person? How can I work my way up to becoming worthy of the broadway stage? What else can you share with me about broadway? Thanks!

Broadway...?performing art center

You don't necessarily NEED fame to get to Broadway, but you need talent, you have to be passionate, you have love what you're doing...and you have to live for competition. If you don't like the competition, don't do it! You'll never make an audition if you can't handle the competition.

If you don't have fame, you're going to need experience. Start off Broadway first and if you can make it there, you can make it on the Great White Way. (A wise producer once told me that all of the talent was off Broadway, anyway.) When you feel that you are ready to jump on a Broadway stage (I know you probably feel like you can now, but just humor me), go to open casting calls. They use these for major productions. 'Wicked' had theirs in Chicago in late May, 'Rent' advertises theirs on Playbill.com. I'm sure you can find more on sites like Broadwayworld.com and Playbill.com, too.

About the Equity card, you don't need that, either. It's like actormyk said, if you attain a job in an Equity run theatre (AKA, Broadway) or with an Equity run company, you automatically become Equity so long as you hold an Equity job and Equity deems you 'worthy' of attaining the card and/or you build up point towards the card. Basically, land a spot in the theatre through an open audition and you become Equity. If that's wrong, I know from experience that it's not far off and I was talking with some other actors who were trying DESPERATELY to explain it to me in theatrical terms that I understood, but we were speaking two completely different languages and what one of us said the other one just stared, smiled and nodded. The downside to not being Equity and going to an audition? You have to wait...and wait...and wait until all of the members of Equity have auditioned before you can go and actually show the auditioners (maybe not a word, but the word I use) what you've got. Check out the Actor's Equity web site for more on that. It's very helpful and once you become Equity they post equity auditions on the site.

You want to know how to still be normal? That's not tough to answer. You're still you no matter what you do and you have to remember where you came from and who you really are. I have a great family who when I forget myself and get a diva complex, kick me back in gear until I feel about two inches tall and they make me build myself up again. You probably have people like that in your life who would be more than willing to tell you that you have forgotten yourself and your place.

Oh, and Broadway does NOT mean fame in this day in age. You're a normal person to everyone even after they've seen your show. There are a few die-hard fans who only know Broadway (forget the movies, these people do not go to the movie theater, 'theatre' is spelled 'theatre and if it is not it is spelled incorrectly, and ten dollars to watch a bunch of people on a flat screen is so un-cool that they'd rather shell out the dough), who get star struck and forget themselves and get giddy in the presence of their favorite Broadway actor or actress. Most people are pretty much ignorant in the world of Broadway and just sort of shun all of the stagedoorers (again, not a word unless you are are me). I've been walking down the street on my off days and seen the fans lining up outside of the theatres after a matin茅e show or even after the late night show and heard star struck tourists asking excitedly why there's a crowd. If I answer them they usually look disappointed, say 'That entire crowd is waiting for THAT?' and roll their eyes before walking away. Makes you kind of angry, really.

My best advice is go for it. If you persevere you can do anything. Just because you have to wait tables to pay the rent or you get told by someone that you would have to lose eight sizes before they would even think of casting you, or you think you did horribly at an audition doesn't mean you have to quit. You might even find something you like more than acting while you are trying to get to where you want to be.

Broadway...?theatre tickets opera theater

It would be difficult to reach Broadway without a small degree of fame because you will first have to get your Equity card. In order to do that, you will have to perform with an Equity theatre for a year acquiring 1 point per week. In order to work for an Equity theatre, I'm going to assume that you're good enough to have gotten some leading roles along the way. It might not be fame in the same sense that Barbra Streisand has to handle fame, but I don't see anyone "sneaking" on to a Broadway stage by working their way all the way there in choruses. Fame has to do with how YOU handle it. I have had people stop me and say "Omigod! It's Petruchio!" or "Lord Goring, I presume?" and while it is gratifying to be remembered for these portrayals on stage, it is nothing that greatly alters my life.
You are still young. You still have a lot of time to become one of the best! People know that you are great and if you work hard and dedicate your life to theater, you can get to broadway. However, these people on broadway have been rejected many times before. Sometimes you wont get the part you want, or a part at all. These people try so hard. Even if you try really hard, there will be a person who trys harder. You have to be strong. To be able to re-build yourself, when you break.

If you want to be big, you are going to be noticed, asked to sign autographs, and take pictures with people you dont know. You wont be a normal person. You cant help that. There are people just like you waiting for the stars to come out, waiting to meet them. That could be you, a star. Even though that isnt what you want, it is apart of the theater package.

Broadway has its pros and cons. Its pros are the magic it gives off, the amazing feeling you gain watching a show and preforming in a show. The cons are even if you work your butt off, sometimes someone else works harder. Fame is part of the package.

Good luck! I mean that with passion and hope for you in the future!
You have answered your own questions. If you do not like competition - never mind the art about fame - you will never get to the level needed for Broadway. There are thousands of poeple who THRIVE on competition - and THEY are scrambling for even the smallest part - aend many do not achieve it.

You will not have to worry about fame. Strive for satisfaction a nd enjoyment. Pursue whatever career will give you personal and financial satisfaction - and then perform in local amateur companies. Abandon the idea of *I bet I could be on Broadway part-time*, as so many others on these lists have asked - they are delusional. Take vocal lesson, and perhaps take some electives in college - beside the requirements of whatever you are REALLY majoring in - in theater.

I am a professional classical musician. I also work out some. I am never going to the Olympics, nor would anyone even choose me for a team. I do it because I like it, and it is good for me. You situation is similar.

Any obscure music recommendations?theater

Good lawd, that's a lot of bands.......

Zen Guerilla kind of takes a page from the MC5 book, playing some raw gritty blues-influenced rock 'n' roll.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvwwBr2xm...

The ***** - Old school punk from Austin. Mudhoney covered this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpLlKlNwR...

Mono - Post-rock from Japan. I saw them live a little more than a month ago and the sounds they created were mind-boggling.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUf0nZ9Ik...

John Fahey. This guy was amazing with the guitar.

Monorchid - Actually I just found this one looking for Circus Lupus but it seems pretty sweet.

Wow, Asylum Street Spankers. I went to school with Guy Forsythe's brother. I didn't think anyone knew them.

Great call on The Jayhawks Darth.

Three Doors Down

Just to name a few good ones...
you need...NEED to listen to Bessie Smith..."empty bed blues" try to find the album "Emperess of the Blues" freakin' awsome!
I'd be willing to bet you have the Nuggets compilation, at least the original. And if you don't I'd recomend it, Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era, the four disc Rhino update is great.

The Undertones are a good punky poppy band.

Teenage Head are a really good Canadian punk band, agan with plenty of pop.

I don't see Slade up there, but they're probably one of the bands you just left out if you have Sweet and T.Rex.

The Hollywood Brats are a great early 70's glam/punk band in the vein of the New York Dolls.

The Boys are a great poppy punk band.

Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros were a good band.

The Jam are a great mod revival/punk band.

The Violent Femmes are cool, I'm sure you've heard "Blister In The Sun" if you don't have anything by them, so I they don't really need a description.

The Ugly Ducklings (if you can find them) were a Canadian garage rock band from the 60's, and they really were one of THE definitive bands. They rocked harder than any of their peers, maybe even the Sonics, and there's an obvious link from them to punk.

Suicide were a neat electronic/punk band from the first wave of New York Bands and you need to hear them at least once before you die, even if you don't like them. I don't even care for them much and I'm saying it.

The Vibrators, Weirdos, Stiff Little Fingers, Stranglers, Talking Heads, X, X-Ray Spex, 999, the Zeros are all good punk bands that I didn't see on your list. But almost everything I have that isn't punk is in that list, but if you ever get in a punky mood visit www.punk77.co.uk and browse through his list of pre '80 bands, it's very extensive.

Hope I helped!

If you like Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst used to be in a band called Park Ave, so try them. Two of the girls who used to be in Park Ave are now in Tilly And The Wall. I love Tilly And The Wall, it's really cool because they use tap-dancing as percussion instead of drums. =]

Also, try The Like, Blonde Redhead, Dear And The Headlights, Meg %26amp; Dia, Rilo Kiley, Wolf Parade, Minus The Bear, and Deerhoof.
You've got it pretty well covered with that great list. You could try some music some internet stations call Americana. A lot of it is sort of alt country from some of the great artists of Texas, like Nanci Griffith, Dale Watson, Jerry Jeff Walker, and others.
Yeah, since Woddy Guthrie and I are much the same

WOW! I'm not sure how long that list was, but I have *only* 187 of those artists in my collection.

I don't know how many of these would class as obscure, but a lot of them are not 'everyday' type bands.

Stars are an amazing indie pop band that everyone should check out - their songs sound so upbeat, but their lyrics are deep and well-written and they’re not your typical band. If you only want to check out one of the bands I list, it has to be Stars. Klaxons are also a good band, and they definitely fall under the “obscure” category. You’ll either love them or you’ll hate them. They classify themselves as New Rave, and they’re really original compared to the popular music of today. There’s also Silversun Pickups, an alternative rock band that has been compared to The Smashing Pumpkins (the lead singer of Silversun Pickups also sounds a lot like Billy Corgan) and Metric, an indie rock group with songs so catchy it’s insane. Those are some of my favourite bands right now, so hopefully you’ll like at least one of them (I was going to recommend Bright Eyes, but I see that you’re already a fan).
You may not be able to find this - but Jim Kweskin %26amp; his Jug Band - song is called Ukelele Lady

Every band I love that's not already on Your list

(Cause 90% of them are)

Zebra

An absolutely unique sounding quasi metal early 80's band

Their singer/guitarist Randy Jackson has a gorgeous voice and is a shredding guitar player, they are also one of the few bands with a full choir sound to most of their songs.

They are very melodic yet heavy.

They are on YouTube and Limewire

Just look up the songs

"Who's Behind The Door" and "Bears"

The Jayhawks

In my opinion, the very best of the 90's alt-country bands

Their alnum "Hollywood Town Hall"

Is one of the very best albums of the 90's I would heartily recommend the entire album to You.

Praying Mantis

The best band (Besides Maiden or Priest) to come out of the NWOBHM, and horribly overlooked.

Their guitarist is one of the best at delivering an avalance of melodic notes I have ever heard. their singer is top notch.

And they write excellent songs

I recommend their album

"Time Tells No Lies"

The Four Horsemen

Their 1990 album "Nobody Said It Was Easy" is one of THE BEST hard rock albums I have ever heard.

But they totally slipped through the cracks because Rick Rubin wasn't interested in developing them

Their song (last track on the album)

"I Need A Thrill/Something Good"

Is absolutely one of the best hard rock guitar anthems ever recorded, I would stack it right up against Freebird of The Song Remains The Same...It's THAT good

I would recommend all these bands for You to check out
The first band I'd have to recommend who aren't on your list is Arcade Fire. I'm sure you've heard of them, and you may already listen to them, but if not, you should definitely check out their two albums, "Funeral" and "Neon Bible". Here are some of the highlights;

I just realised, Of Montreal isn't on your list. If you don't already know them, the album they released this year, "Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer" is a good starting point.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-T-5LJ9K...
check out dresden dolls.

if you only listen to one band that is recommended, make it that one.

my favorite songs are girl anachronism, missed me, half jack, coin-operated boy, backstabber, sex changes, god i love them all!!
Finger eleven - paralyzer!!!!!
Midnight Oil, Huskerdu, Echo and the Bunny men, The ButtholeSurfers, Guadal Canal Diary, Emogene Heap, Rush, Nantucket, Angel, and ZZ Hill.
your taste is perfect.

The Plasmatics
Lol, that is alot!

Only thing I listen to that isn't up there and I can remember at the moment is The Stills (indie), No Man (Steven Wilson art rock), Ani DiFranco (indie), Eloy (prog) and Philip Glass (a composer)

I probably listed stuff you already have, haha. that list is huge!

Did any generation of Roman citizen live to see the empire "fall"?

When Rome ultimately fell, it was already depopulated and stripped of its wealth anyway, and I don't think it was even the capital of the west at that point as it had moved to Ravenna. What my question is was it possible for a single generation back then to have witnessed Rome transform from an imperial and grand city into a city of decay, disease, etc... I'm wondering if the city experienced a dramatic transformation from "golden" age to "dark" at any point.

So in other words, did any Roman experience in his life Rome changing from a secure, peaceful city with games, theater, philosophy, races, festivals, reliable food supplies etc. to a decayed shell of itself under invasion and all but abandoned by its leadership?

Did any generation of Roman citizen live to see the empire "fall"?theatre

Decline in Morals and Values

Those morals and values that kept together the Roman legions and thus the empire could not be maintained towards the end of the empire. Crimes of violence made the streets of the larger cities unsafe. Even during PaxRomana there were 32,000 prostitutes in Rome. Emperors like Nero and Caligula became infamous for wasting money on lavish parties where guests ate and drank until they became ill. The most popular amusement was watching the gladiatorial combats in the Colosseum. These were attended by the poor, the rich, and frequently the emperor himself. As gladiators fought, vicious cries and curses were heard from the audience. One contest after another was staged in the course of a single day. Should the ground become too soaked with blood, it was covered over with a fresh layer of sand and the performance went on.

Public Health

There were many public health and environmental problems. Many of the wealthy had water brought to their homes through lead pipes. Previously the aqueducts had even purified the water but at the end lead pipes were thought to be preferable. The wealthy death rate was very high. The continuous interaction of people at the Colosseum, the blood and death probable spread disease. Those who lived on the streets in continuous contact allowed for an uninterrupted strain of disease much like the homeless in the poorer run shelters of today. Alcohol use increased as well adding to the incompetency of the general public.

Political Corruption

One of the most difficult problems was choosing a new emperor. Unlike Greece where transition may not have been smooth but was at least consistent, the Romans never created an effective system to determine how new emperors would be selected. The choice was always open to debate between the old emperor, the Senate, the Praetorian Guard (the emperor's's private army), and the army. Gradually, the Praetorian Guard gained complete authority to choose the new emperor, who rewarded the guard who then became more influential, perpetuating the cycle. Then in 186 A. D. the army strangled the new emperor, the practice began of selling the throne to the highest bidder. During the next 100 years, Rome had 37 different emperors - 25 of whom were removed from office by assassination. This contributed to the overall weaknesses of the empire.

Unemployment

During the latter years of the empire farming was done on large estates called latifundia that were owned by wealthy men who used slave labor. A farmer who had to pay workmen could not produce goods as cheaply. Many farmers could not compete with these low prices and lost or sold their farms. This not only undermined the citizen farmer who passed his values to his family, but also filled the cities with unemployed people. At one time, the emperor was importing grain to feed more than 100,000 people in Rome alone. These people were not only a burden but also had little to do but cause trouble and contribute to an ever increasing crime rate.

Inflation

The roman economy suffered from inflation (an increase in prices) beginning after the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Once the Romans stopped conquering new lands, the flow of gold into the Roman economy decreased. Yet much gold was being spent by the romans to pay for luxury items. This meant that there was less gold to use in coins. As the amount of gold used in coins decreased, the coins became less valuable. To make up for this loss in value, merchants raised the prices on the goods they sold. Many people stopped using coins and began to barter to get what they needed. Eventually, salaries had to be paid in food and clothing, and taxes were collected in fruits and vegetables.

Urban decay

Wealthy Romans lived in a domus, or house, with marble walls, floors with intricate colored tiles, and windows made of small panes of glass. Most Romans, however, were not rich, They lived in small smelly rooms in apartment houses with six or more stories called islands. Each island covered an entire block. At one time there were 44,000 apartment houses within the city walls of Rome. First-floor apartments were not occupied by the poor since these living quarters rented for about $00 a year. The more shaky wooden stairs a family had to climb, the cheaper the rent became. The upper apartments that the poor rented for $40 a year were hot, dirty, crowed, and dangerous. Anyone who could not pay the rent was forced to move out and live on the crime-infested streets. Because of this cities began to decay.

Inferior Technology

During the last 400 years of the empire, the scientific achievements of the Romans were limited almost entirely to engineering and the organization of public services. They built marvelous roads, bridges, and aqueducts. They established the first system of medicine for the benefit of the poor. But since the Romans relied so much on human and animal labor, they failed to invent many new machines or find new technology to produce goods more efficiently. They could not provide enough goods for their growing population. They were no longer conquering other civilizations and adapting their technology, they were actually losing territory they could not longer maintain with their legions.

Military Spending

Maintaining an army to defend the border of the Empire from barbarian attacks was a constant drain on the government. Military spending left few resources for other vital activities, such as providing public housing and maintaining quality roads and aqueducts. Frustrated Romans lost their desire to defend the Empire. The empire had to begin hiring soldiers recruited from the unemployed city mobs or worse from foreign counties. Such an army was not only unreliable, but very expensive. The emperors were forced to raise taxes frequently which in turn led again to increased inflation.

THE FINAL BLOWS

For years, the well-disciplined Roman army held the barbarians of Germany back. Then in the third century A. D. the Roman soldiers were pulled back from the Rhine-Danube frontier to fight civil war in Italy. This left the Roman border open to attack. Gradually Germanic hunters and herders from the north began to overtake Roman lands in Greece and Gaul (later France). Then in 476 A. D. the Germanic general Odacer or Odovacar overthrew the last of the Roman Emperors, Augustulus Romulus. From then on the western part of the Empire was ruled by Germanic chieftain. Roads and bridges were left in disrepair and fields left untilled. Pirates and bandits made travel unsafe. Cities could not be maintained without goods from the farms, trade and business began to disappear. And Rome was no more in the West.

Best drama/performing quote?

Choose one, or add your own:

The drama of life is best displayed on stage.

It is there, and only there, we can relax and enjoy the show.

Theater is in my blood. It moves me. It thrills me.

I am never more alive, than when I am pretending.

Acting is for everyone. We all play our parts, everyday.

But on stage, people applaud when you do it well.

If the play is good, the actors receive all the credit.

And when it is bad, everyone knows it was the director鈥檚 fault.

One line, or a thousand, it does not matter,

say the words so they will be remembered forever.

The stage is a place where spirits soar,

and hearts and minds are set free.

Some will say, it is only entertainment, but it is much more.

It is truth, brought to life, by those who care what is true.

Make your entrances and exits grand,

people seldom remember the rest.

Sing as if generations later, they will dust off a recording

of your voice to learn what life and love are鈥nd can be.

When I'm directing, I definitely believe this:
